More than 500 veterans, family members, and community supporters gathered on Saturday, April 25, for the second annual Veterans Resource Festival, held in the parking lot of the Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Office in Council Bluffs.

With clear skies and warm spring weather, the event created a welcoming space for veterans to connect with essential services, local organizations, and one another.

Throughout the day, attendees explored a wide range of resources designed to support veterans and their families, from benefits assistance and healthcare services to community-based programs and support networks. Vendors reported strong engagement, with many sharing that attendees not only asked questions but also signed up for services on-site, an encouraging sign of the event’s impact.

“The Resource Festival is our way of connecting veterans and their families with the information, services, and support they have earned, all in a welcoming, enjoyable setting,” said Peggy Becker, Pottawattamie County Veterans Service Administrator.

“Navigating resources can often feel overwhelming. Going from office to office, being redirected again and again, only to discover you’re in the wrong place can be frustrating and discouraging,” Becker added. “By bringing organizations together in one convenient location, we make accessing support simpler, clearer, and more efficient. And by creating a festival-like atmosphere, we hope to make it an event people want to attend. It's a chance to socialize, enjoy a good meal, explore services at their own pace, and have a little fun along the way.”

In addition to connecting veterans with critical resources, the event also supported the Veterans Food Pantry. Nearly 160 pounds of meat were donated, helping to stock shelves and extend support to veterans in need across the community.

Now in its second year, the Veterans Resource Festival continues to build momentum as a key outreach effort for Pottawattamie County. Organizers plan to bring the event back again next year, continuing the tradition on the last Saturday in April.
