Pottawattamie County continues to see a sophisticated fraud scheme involving falsified county bills and invoices being sent to citizens. These fraudulent invoices appear highly legitimate because the criminals are specifically targeting residents who have recently participated in, or been listed on, public county meeting agendas.
Scammers are using publicly available information to create fake invoices, hoping recipients will pay without question due to recent county interaction.
If you receive a bill, invoice, or request for payment from the county you did not expect OR if the amount seems unusual, do not pay it.
Instead, take the following actions to protect yourself from fraud:
- Contact the county directly.
- Verify the legitimacy of the invoice by using a phone number or email address that you know is official. You can find valid contact information for all county departments on the county website. Do not use contact information provided on the suspicious bill.
Always confirm the legitimacy of an unexpected bill with the county before submitting any payment. Paying a fake invoice means your money is going directly to a criminal.
