The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation recognizing November 4–11, 2026, as Operation Green Light for Veterans during its October 27 meeting, encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to show their support for local veterans by displaying green lights.
Operation Green Light for Veterans is a nationwide initiative supported by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that encourages communities to recognize the service and sacrifices of military veterans. By displaying a green light in a window or outside a home or business, participants can offer a visible expression of gratitude for those who have served.
During the meeting, Veterans Service Caseworker Sam Pettit emphasized the importance of community participation and recognition.
"It's just good to see the local community getting behind and supporting our veterans and recognizing what they've done for their country and for their local community," Pettit said.
Pottawattamie County will also participate by illuminating the courthouse and Veterans Service Office in green during the week leading up to Veterans Day on November 11.
The proclamation also recognizes the challenges veterans may face when transitioning from military service to civilian life and the importance of connecting them with the services, resources, and community support they have earned.
Residents are encouraged to participate in Operation Green Light by displaying a green light November 4–11 as a simple but meaningful way to honor veterans and demonstrate the community's appreciation for their service.
