The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed October 2025 as Substance Use Prevention Month, recognizing the importance of awareness, education, and community partnerships in addressing substance misuse.

Substance misuse affects thousands of individuals and families each day across the United States, including right here in Pottawattamie County. It contributes to preventable deaths, mental health challenges, and strain on communities. Prevention efforts, education, and early intervention can save lives and help build stronger, healthier communities for all.

“Prevention starts with awareness,” said Board Chair Scott Belt. “By having open conversations, supporting healthy choices, and connecting people to the right resources, we can empower individuals of all ages to make informed, substance-free decisions.”

This proclamation builds on the goals of Pottawattamie County’s Community Opioid Action Plan, which outlines local strategies for prevention, treatment, and recovery. The plan was developed through community input and collaboration among health officials, service providers, and county leaders to strengthen the county’s response to substance use.

Local events and initiatives throughout October will highlight these ongoing efforts:

  • National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – Saturday, October 25: Residents can safely dispose of unused or expired medications during the community event at Walgreens on West Broadway. Learn more about this national initiative and additional collection sites at dea.gov/takebackday.

  • Red Ribbon Week – October 23–31: The Pottawattamie County Courthouse will be illuminated in red as part of a nationwide campaign encouraging youth and families to live drug-free. Learn more at RedRibbon.org.

As Maria Sieck, Public Health Administrator, explained, “One of our greatest strengths as a county is our community partnership and engagement.” Full Circle Recovery, a Council Bluffs–based organization located in the Omni Centre, plays an important role in the county’s efforts to support individuals and families affected by substance use. Through programs, support groups, education, and outreach, Full Circle Recovery helps strengthen community resilience and pathways to recovery. Learn more about their services and mission at recoverfullcircle.org.

The proclamation also honors and supports the individuals, families, educators, healthcare professionals, first responders, and prevention advocates who work daily to reduce substance use and support recovery efforts throughout the community.

The Board encourages citizens, schools, community organizations, faith groups, and local businesses to take part in prevention-focused activities throughout the month by attending local events, sharing resources, or simply wearing red in support of a drug-free community.

Community members seeking help or wanting more information about local prevention and treatment options can visit the Pottawattamie County Public Health Substance Use Resources page.

Together, through awareness, action, and partnership, Pottawattamie County continues its commitment to building a healthier, safer, and substance-free future for all residents.
