Pottawattamie County Cooling Centers Activated

In anticipation for life-threatening hot temperatures that are expected to make their way through the region today, Pottawattamie County Emergency Management has activated its Extreme Temperature Plan. Cooling Centers are available throughout the county for individuals seeking refuge from the weather conditions. The following partner facilities are designated as cooling centers:
Pottawattamie County Health Services Building, 515 5th Ave., Council Bluffs
8am – 4:30pm
Avoca Library, 213 N Elm St., Avoca
10am – 5pm
Carson City Hall, 316 S Commercial St., Carson
8:15am – 10pm
New Visions (Joshua House), 1435 N 15th St., Council Bluffs
9am – 6pm
Salvation Army of Council Bluffs, 715 N 16th St., Council Bluffs
9am – 3pm
NAMI Southwest Iowa, 202 S 2nd St., Neola
Monday, Friday: 7:30am – 4:30pm
Oakland City Hall, 614 Dr. VanZee Rd., Oakland
8am – 4:30pm
Eckels Memorial Library, 207 Highway 6, Oakland
10am - 5pm
Treynor Community Center, 11 W Main St., Treynor
9am – 4pm
Underwood City Hall, 241 3rd St., Underwood

Cooling Centers are facilities where persons can temporarily go during periods of extreme temperatures to get out of dangerous weather conditions. Few to no services are provided beyond what is normally available in that building. The facilities are designated as Cooling Centers during their designated operational hours. Residents are encouraged to check on family members, friends, and neighbors who may be at higher risk for injuries or illness, especially the elderly and those with specific medical conditions. Additionally, limit the time children and pets spend outdoors during extreme weather. In preparation for extreme weather, Pottawattamie County residents are encouraged to be prepared, safe, and stay informed.
