National Voter Registration Day Encourages Residents to Get Election Ready

The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed September 15, 2026, as National Voter Registration Day, encouraging eligible residents to register to vote, verify their registration information and prepare for the upcoming General Election. 

The Board approved the proclamation during its September 15 meeting, with Pottawattamie County Auditor Mary Ann Hanusa and Auditor’s Office staff members Jodie Beckman and Thea Harrison in attendance. 

National Voter Registration Day is an annual nonpartisan civic observance focused on raising awareness of voter registration opportunities and helping eligible Americans prepare to participate in upcoming elections. 

“Accurate and accessible voter information helps ensure eligible citizens understand how to register, verify their registration status and prepare to participate in the electoral process,” the proclamation states. 

Get Election Ready 

With the November 3 General Election approaching, National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity for Pottawattamie County residents to make sure they are prepared to vote. 

Residents can: 

• Register to vote. Eligible Iowa residents can register online with an Iowa driver’s license or state-issued non-operator ID or complete a voter registration form and return it to the Pottawattamie County Auditor’s Office. 

• Verify their registration. Already registered? Voters can use the Iowa Secretary of State’s online voter registration search to confirm their registration and make sure their information is current. 

• Update their information. Voters who have recently moved or changed their name should update their voter registration information. 

The voter pre-registration deadline for the November 3 General Election is Monday, October 19. Iowa also allows eligible voters to register at their polling place on Election Day by providing the required proof of identity and residence. 

Preparing for the November 3 General Election 

The Auditor’s Office is continuing preparations for the November 3 General Election while encouraging residents to make their own voting plans. 

Pottawattamie County voters may cast their ballot on Election Day, vote absentee in person at the Auditor’s Office or request an absentee ballot to vote by mail. 

Absentee ballots will be available beginning October 14. Requests to have an absentee ballot mailed must be received by the Auditor’s Office by 5 p.m. October 19.
