Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for children ages 1–13. One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury is ensuring children are properly secured in the correct car or booster seat.
To help families protect their youngest passengers, Pottawattamie County Public Health offers free car seat safety checks conducted by certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians.
This month, three Public Health staff members completed CPS Technician certification through the Iowa Child Passenger Safety Program at Lewis Township Fire & Rescue. The nationally recognized training provides hands-on instruction in car seat and booster seat safety, equipping technicians to assist families with proper installation, fit, and usage.
Studies show that three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, which can significantly reduce their effectiveness in a crash. Proper installation and correct use are critical to keeping children safe.
Protecting Our Most Vulnerable Passengers
Keeping children safe in vehicles starts with three key steps:
-
Using the correct car or booster seat for a child’s age, height, and weight
-
Making sure the seat is properly installed
-
Buckling up every single ride, every single time
Certified CPS Technicians are available to check car seat installations, answer questions, and provide guidance to caregivers who want peace of mind that their child is properly protected.
