The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors designated October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month during its Tuesday, October 6 meeting, joining communities across the country in raising awareness of breast cancer, early detection and support for those affected by the disease.

Representatives from CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs joined the Board for the proclamation, including Amber Quigley, Development Director with the CHI Health Foundation; Marchell Benes, Social Worker with the Outpatient Cancer Support Team; and Holly Hamilton, Supervisor, Social Work.

The proclamation recognizes the impact breast cancer has on individuals and families and encourages residents to increase awareness, speak with health care providers about appropriate screening and individual risk factors, and support those affected by breast cancer.

As part of the County's recognition throughout October, the Pottawattamie County Courthouse will be illuminated pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

This year's observance also follows the County's inaugural "Find Your Fight" Breast Cancer Awareness apparel fundraiser, created by Pottawattamie County employees in partnership with Anytime Tees.

The September fundraiser resulted in 136 apparel items ordered and more than $750 raised. All proceeds benefit patients undergoing breast cancer treatment at CHI Health Mercy Council Bluffs through the CHI Health Mercy Oncology Fund.

During Tuesday's meeting, Benes explained that a cancer diagnosis can bring additional expenses beyond medical treatment, including gas, groceries, prescription costs, wigs, and other items. Contributions to the Oncology Fund help CHI Health Mercy continue providing support to patients as they navigate treatment.

“They feel so good to know people are caring about their journey, and that they have a little extra help,” Benes said.

Pottawattamie County thanks Anytime Tees for partnering on the inaugural fundraiser and helping bring the "Find Your Fight" campaign to life, as well as everyone who purchased apparel or contributed to the effort.
