The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved and signed a proclamation designating June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Pottawattamie County. The proclamation highlights the importance of protecting older adults and promoting awareness of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

According to the proclamation, an estimated one in ten older Americans experiences abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Because many cases go unreported, some individuals do not receive the support and protection they need. County leaders emphasized that elder abuse affects individuals across all socioeconomic backgrounds and can threaten the safety, health, and independence of older adults.

Representatives from Connections Area Agency on Aging, Iowa Health and Human Services Adult Protective Services, and the Western Iowa Services Collaborative Disability Access Point attended the meeting in support of the proclamation.

"This takes each and every one of us, not just elected officials, but service providers as well as our community," said a representative from Connections Area Agency on Aging. "Together we send a clear message that our community is united in protecting older adults and raising awareness so no older Iowan feels invisible or alone."

The proclamation notes that preventing elder abuse helps older adults maintain their independence and continue contributing as leaders, mentors, volunteers, and valued members of the community. Prevention efforts include strengthening the aging services network, increasing public awareness, providing education, and supporting policies that protect older Iowans.

During the meeting, representatives from partnering agencies discussed the importance of collaboration in serving older adults and individuals with disabilities. Officials from Iowa Health and Human Services Adult Protective Services and the Western Iowa Services Collaborative Disability Access Point highlighted their ongoing work with local partners to connect residents with resources and support services.

By proclaiming June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, the Board of Supervisors encourages Pottawattamie County residents to learn the signs of abuse, support prevention efforts, and help ensure all individuals can age with safety, dignity, and respect. Together, these efforts can help build a stronger and more compassionate community for all.
