Auditor’s Office Bids Farewell to Audrey Chapin After 45 Years of Service

This week, Pottawattamie County celebrates and thanks Audrey Chapin for an incredible 45 years of service in the Auditor’s Office as she retires on Friday.
Audrey began her career with the county in 1979 as a part-time clerk while still a senior at Thomas Jefferson High School, participating in an Office Education class. Over the next four and a half decades, she became a valued and trusted part of the Auditor’s team, eventually serving as Payroll Benefits Specialist.
Audrey spent her entire career in the Auditor’s Office, where she says she most enjoyed working with citizens coming into the courthouse and helping with elections. One memory that stands out came during one of her first elections:
“There was a board set up in the lobby where the election results were posted. I had to run the results down, and when I got off the elevator all the people waiting would part and let me go right to the board. That really made me feel like I was doing something important,” she shared.
Throughout her time with the county, Audrey worked under four different County Auditors, learning something from each, and says she will miss seeing all the coworkers she considers friends each day.
She cites former County Auditor Marilyn Drake and former County Treasurer Judy Miller as particularly influential role models, noting how they balanced full-time careers with raising families and made it look effortless.
Looking ahead, Audrey is excited to spend more time with her family and friends, take a few trips, and enjoy more time reading.
“Audrey’s dedication to the residents of Pottawattamie County and her steady presence in the Auditor’s Office have made a lasting impact,” said County Auditor Mary Ann Hanusa. “We are grateful for her many years of service and wish her all the best as she begins this exciting new chapter.”
