Pottawattamie County has officially proclaimed April 19–25, 2026, as National Library Week, recognizing the vital role libraries and library staff play in strengthening communities and supporting lifelong learning.

Council Bluffs Public Library Director Antonia Krupicka-Smith and Avoca Library Director Sabrina Lewis presented the proclamation to the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors on behalf of the county’s five public libraries. The directors expressed appreciation for the county’s continued support and highlighted the wide range of services libraries provide to residents across the region.

Observed annually, National Library Week celebrates the impact libraries have as centers for education, connection, and opportunity. Libraries across Pottawattamie County offer free and equitable access to books, digital resources, technology, and innovative programming for individuals of all ages.

“Libraries spark creativity, fuel imagination, and inspire lifelong learning,” the proclamation states. “They serve as vibrant community hubs, connecting people with knowledge, resources, and each other.”

In addition to supporting literacy and education, libraries provide valuable resources for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and students, while also partnering with local schools, businesses, and organizations to expand access to essential services. Programs such as story times, STEAM activities, and community events help foster curiosity and engagement from an early age.

The proclamation also recognizes the important work of librarians and library staff, who create welcoming spaces that encourage discovery, collaboration, and creativity, while upholding the principles of intellectual freedom and access to information.

As part of National Library Week, residents are encouraged to visit their local library, explore available resources, and take advantage of the many free services offered throughout the county.

Whether checking out a book, attending a program, or accessing digital tools, community members are invited to discover new opportunities and “find their joy” at their local library.
