Join naturalist and artisan Dustin Clayton for this three-part exploration of the art of basket making. All over the world, people have collected and used a variety of fibrous plants to create durable, functional, and beautiful vessels and containers. Over the course of three weeks, we’ll learn about the history of basketry, some of the uses to which baskets have been put, and what plants occur in our area that can be used to create baskets. We’ll cover some of the many varied techniques that can be used to create baskets, and using locally gathered materials, we will create baskets of our own.

Have you ever walked through a winter forest and wondered what trees you were looking at? Without leaves it can often be difficult to differentiate between Oak, Ash, Elm, and Walnut. But luckily there are ways to tell. Join Naturalist Dustin Clayton for an illuminating walk in the woods, where we will discuss a variety of ways that we can recognize the differences in our local trees. By looking at buds, bark, leaf scars, growth pattern and more, we can begin not only to learn the trees of the forest, but also how to deepen our observation of the world around us.
