Pottawattamie County Recognizes May as Meth Prevention Month

The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed May 2025 as Methamphetamine Prevention Month, joining communities across Iowa in raising awareness about the devastating impacts of meth use and addiction. The Heartland Family Service prevention team was present at the Board of Supervisors meeting in support of the proclamation. The mission of Heartland Family Service and their 423 staff members is to strengthen individuals, families, and communities through advocacy, education, counseling, and support services.

Methamphetamine abuse continues to be a significant public health and public safety concern, affecting individuals and families from all walks of life, especially across the state of Iowa. The Board’s proclamation emphasizes that addiction knows no boundaries—impacting people regardless of age, occupation, background, or community.

“Meth doesn’t just harm the person using it,” said Board Chair Scott Belt. “Its ripple effects are felt throughout our entire county—straining law enforcement, health care, child welfare, and education systems.”

While Iowa has made meaningful progress in reducing local meth manufacturing and intercepting large-scale importation, the demand for the drug persists. According to the proclamation, methamphetamine use remains widespread in all regions of the state, contributing to increased crime, child abuse and neglect, and long-term physical and mental health issues.

Meth Prevention Month is a call to action for the entire community to become part of the solution. Through early intervention, education, treatment resources, and strong community partnerships, Pottawattamie County can help reduce meth use and support recovery for those affected. The importance of focusing on recovery services was also emphasized during the meeting.

Residents are encouraged to learn more about substance use prevention, talk to loved ones about the risks of methamphetamine, and support local organizations like Heartland Family Service working to address addiction and its root causes.

By standing together, Pottawattamie County affirms its commitment to building healthier, safer communities.
