Pottawattamie County Recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, reaffirming the county’s commitment to education, early detection, and support for those impacted by the disease.

Each year, Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a vital reminder of the importance of early detection through screenings such as mammograms, which can save lives and improve outcomes. In 2025, an estimated 316,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease that affects women and men alike.

To help raise awareness, the Pottawattamie County Courthouse will be illuminated in pink from October 7 through October 22, symbolizing the county’s support for survivors, those currently battling breast cancer, and families who have lost loved ones.

Several key awareness dates are being recognized this month:

  • October 10 – Council Bluffs Pink Out Day, hosted in collaboration with Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital and local businesses, encouraging community members and county employees to wear pink in solidarity.

  • October 13 – Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, recognizing those whose cancer has advanced beyond the breast tissue.

  • October 17–23 – Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week, acknowledging that men can also be affected by breast cancer.

The Board of Supervisors encourages residents, organizations, and businesses to participate by scheduling screenings, sharing resources, and showing visible support throughout the month.

“We stand in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer and thank the medical professionals, researchers, and caregivers who work tirelessly to improve prevention, treatment, and support,” the proclamation reads.
