Pottawattamie County will join communities across the nation in observing National Police Week from May 11–17, 2025, a time to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and remember those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
The week-long recognition pays tribute to the more than 800,000 law enforcement officers who serve our communities each day, including the dedicated men and women of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office. Their commitment to protecting life and property, upholding justice, and maintaining public safety is at the heart of a healthy and secure community.
A proclamation issued by the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors notes that more than 24,000 officers across the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice since the first recorded line-of-duty death in 1786, including five individuals from the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office.
Those officers’ names are permanently engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each year, new names are added during a ceremony held during Police Week, including those lost in 2024 and officers whose sacrifices had not been recognized in prior years.
One of the most poignant tributes of the week will take place on May 13, 2025, during the 37th Candlelight Vigil hosted by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. On May 15, communities will observe Peace Officers Memorial Day, with U.S. flags lowered to half-staff in honor of all fallen officers and their families.
“Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect,” said Board Chair Scott Belt. “National Police Week is a moment to express our deepest gratitude for their sacrifice, courage, and commitment to the people of Pottawattamie County.”
In alignment with blue being the symbolic color of law enforcement officers, the Pottawattamie County courthouse will be illuminated blue from May 11 - 17.
