National Nurses Week: Honoring #ThePowerOfNurses

Pottawattamie County is proud to recognize National Nurses Week, observed May 6–12, 2025, and to celebrate the extraordinary impact of nurses across every corner of the health care system.

In a proclamation signed by the Board of Supervisors, the County acknowledges the dedication, skill, and compassion of nurses working in hospitals, clinics, public health programs, long-term care facilities, schools, homes, and correctional facilities. From licensed practical nurses and registered nurses to nurse practitioners and support staff, these professionals play a vital role in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care every day.

This year’s theme, “The Power of Nurses,” reflects the tireless commitment nurses make to improving outcomes, advocating for patients, and advancing the future of health care. From addressing chronic disease and aging populations to serving on the frontlines of public health emergencies, nurses continue to rise to meet our community’s evolving needs.

“The role nurses play in our health care system is absolutely essential,” said Board Chair Scott Belt. “They’re not only caregivers but leaders, educators, and advocates for better health outcomes in Pottawattamie County and beyond.”

As part of the national Nurses Light Up the Sky initiative, buildings and landmarks across the U.S.—including the Pottawattamie County Courthouse—will be illuminated in red to honor the profession and encourage public awareness and appreciation. The initiative invites residents to share photos of red-lit landmarks and messages of gratitude on social media using the hashtag #ThePowerOfNurses.

Pottawattamie County invites all residents to join in recognizing the critical contributions of nurses, not just during National Nurses Week, but throughout the year.
