General Election
A General Election is the election in which federal and state officers, members of Congress and of the general assembly, county and township officers, and other officers appear on the ballot. General Elections are held the 1st Tuesday after the 1st Monday in November of each even-numbered year.
Dates & Deadlines
Federal & State Candidates: Must file with Secretary of State Office in Des Moines
- Federal & State Candidate Filing Starts – Monday, February 23, 2026
- Federal & State Candidate Filing Deadline – Tuesday, June 2, 2026
County Candidates:
- County Candidate Filing Starts – Monday, March 2, 2026
- 1st day to submit Absentee Ballot Request Form – Tuesday, August 25, 2026
- County Candidate Filing Deadline – Tuesday, June 2, 2026 - Last day to file nomination papers for county offices with the Auditor. This includes NPPO candidates, candidates nominated by petition, candidates for non-partisan offices and Democratic and Republican parties nomination to fill ballot vacancies.
- Filing Deadline for Specific County Offices - Ag Extension, Soil & Water, Hospital Trustees - Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
- Absentee Ballots Ready to be Mailed – Wednesday, October 14, 2026
- Voter Pre-Registration Deadline – Monday, October 19, 2026
- Last Day Auditor's office can mail out Absentee Ballots – Monday, October 19, 2026

Important Information
- Voter ID will be required on Election Day. Voters going to the polls on Election Day will be required to provide ID in order to cast a regular ballot.
- Effective October 1, 2019, voters are required to provide either their driver's license or non operator's ID number or their four digit voter PIN when requesting an absentee ballot be mailed to them or when voting absentee at the courthouse.
Unofficial results will be posted on election night.
