Tri-Center High School Students Celebrate End of School Year By Planting Trees

Thanks to grant funding from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Trees for Kids program and support from Council Bluffs Trees Forever, Pottawattamie Conservation joined 30 students from Tri-Center High School in planting 14 trees on school grounds on May 13th, 2022.

Planting trees is a great way to support the environment while beautifying the landscape, and involving students in the process helps them learn more about our ecosystem and the role they play in supporting it.

Students dug holes for, planted, watered, and staked several tree species including Serviceberry, Red Oak, Bur Oak, Kentucky Coffeetree, and a variety of cherry and apple trees. Trees were purchased from Sherbondy’s Garden Center and Iowa Native Trees and Shrubs.

Special thank you to Tri-Center student volunteers as well as adult helpers from Council Bluffs Trees Forever, Master Gardeners, and Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland.

About Trees for Kids: The Trees for Kids grant program serves to educate K-12 and college students in Iowa about the importance of trees through tree planting events at schools and on public land. Grant recipients are awarded up to $2,500 per project to purchase trees and mulch from Iowa nurseries. DNR staff members provide planting, mulching, and watering demonstrations and offer guidance to students as they plant their trees.
