Pottawattamie County Auditor's office is excited to announce the hiring of a Real Estate Specialist.  The Real Estate Specialist is a full-time, non-exempt position.

Responsible for researching and processing property transfers and ownership information, review of legal descriptions, and the updating of information on real estate records.

Essential Functions

Maintain accurate records of real estate documents, legal descriptions, and ownership; maintain electronic real estate transfer records.  


Approves, locates, describes, and puts data into final form from computer entries (Tyler software), ensuring all data is correct.


Reviews legal documents from the Recorder’s Officer, (e.g., warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, contracts, condemnations, etc.); identifies location of parcel(s) designated in the legal description utilizing real estate computer system; determines actions necessary to update real estate file including owner changes and parcel division, return to, or removal from, tax roll.


Review land surveys and legal descriptions for the accurate processing and recording of documents for property splits, combinations, transfers, and plats.


Provide excellent constituent service.   Respond to telephone, email, and counter inquiries regarding real estate ownership information and legal descriptions. Provide assistance by researching plat books, transfer books, and other legal documents to provide property history and to verify the accuracy of information.


Prepare various departmental reports from recorded documents according to established procedures.


Perform other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.


Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

Ability to pay close attention to detail, while managing frequent interruptions while performing job duties.  Ability to spot discrepancies in legal descriptions and land surveys.

Preferred knowledge of legal documents related to real estate transactions.

Knowledge of and the ability to maintain departmental policies, practices, and standards.

Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.

Basic keyboard and typing skills.

Ability to research, analyze, and extract data from maps and other legal documents.

Ability to make decisions in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to operate a personal computer and other general office equipment.

Ability to maintain accurate and complete office records.

Regular and reliable attendance at work reporting location is essential to this position.  

Ability to read property legal descriptions and to interpret information.

Must possess effective communication skills including written, verbal, and listening skills.

Ability to complete other duties as assigned.

Essential Education, Certification, and/or Licenses

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Knowledge of real estate process is beneficial.

Must be able to become a Notary Public and maintain it during the course of employment.
