Summary

The Pottawattamie Count Public Health Department is announcing the hiring of a full-time Public Health Nurse II. 

This position will perform intermediate advanced human support work conducting HIV and STI testing, providing recommendations, performing disease investigations, overseeing and assisting with the Immunization Program, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Public Health Administrator.  Limited oversight is exercised over Public Health Nursing staff.

Essential Functions

Performs comprehensive individual and family assessments, administers direct client care.


Performs HIV and STI testing and treatment; provides referrals and recommendations to patients.


Collects lab specimens and/or performs testing, reviews and interprets lab results; performs phlebotomy work.


Oversees and assists with the Immunization Program; administers immunizations.


Collects and analyzes data; prepares reports; ensures compliance with Federal and State regulations.


Researches grant programs, assists with applications, coordinates activities and ensures requirements.


Collaborates in the development and delivery of community health programs and activities.


Conducts disease investigations and responds accordingly.


Assists with the emergency preparedness programs.


Assists with the development of department programs, policies, and procedures.

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

Thorough knowledge of the principles, standards, practices and techniques of practical and vocational nursing. 

Thorough knowledge of the dangers inherent in and the precautions to be taken in the use of drugs and other medication. 

 Thorough knowledge of treatment, assessment, immunization and related medical services.

Thorough knowledge of local and State rules, regulations, procedures and policies pertaining to nursing services.

Thorough knowledge of the principles of public health services.

Thorough knowledge of the methods of organizing, coordinating and carrying out health and wellness programs.

Skill in administering examinations, tests and treatment.

Skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment.

Skill in excellent customer service.

Skill in administering shots and vaccinations.

Skill in training, planning, assigning, direction and supervision of the work of subordinates.

Ability to exercise judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.

Ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports.

Ability to handle confidential information according to established procedures.

Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Ability to diagnose and administer treatment of a variety of common illnesses and injuries.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports; ability to repair and maintain assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Administrators, coworkers, nurses, program leads, patients, and the general public.

Essential Education, Certification, and/or Licenses

Bachelor’s degree with coursework in nursing, or related field and considerable experience providing public health education, administering vaccinations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications

Possession of State of Iowa Board of Nursing Registered Nurse certification upon hire.

Possession of Red Cross CPR certification, BLS and State of Iowa Department of Human Services Child and Adult Abuse certification upon hire.

Obtain Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, and 700, basic epidemiology training, St. Louis Prevention Training Center certification, blood borne pathogen training, Respirator Fit Test and CBSS Manual training within 6 months of hire.

Valid driver's license in the State of Iowa.
