Health Educator

Summary

Pottawattamie County Public Health is announcing the hiring of a Health Educator. This position will require travel within the community to provide outreach education to the community including local schools and youth groups to engage youth on the health relationship curriculum.

An individual in this position will promote health and wellness to the community through education, health promotion activities and referral for services needed to individuals and groups.  Engages and coordinates youth groups on healthy relationship curriculum.  Provides education on prevention of substance use and also prevention of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, dating violence and human trafficking. Work should be performed under but with limited supervision of the Public Health Administrator.

Essential Functions

Provide age-appropriate education to youth and young adults ages 10-29 on sexuality and positive relationships

Support youth with self-confidence, motivation, and self-esteem tactics to help them make healthy decisions

Independently organize and actively engage participation in structured health education programs to encourage healthy lifestyles

Support youth, young adults and families with appropriate community resources

Collaborate with schools and partner organizations to implement and lead youth programs

Educate on human trafficking prevention and address risk factors; Build resilience by strengthening students’ knowledge and skills, and increasing their perception of risk

Assists Promotions Coordinator with outreach design for all Health Education programs

Prepare and submit records and reports as required by programs and funding

Assist with new projects and perform other tasks as assigned by the Public Health Administrator

Perform other duties as assigned or as situations dictate

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

General knowledge of health promotion methods, principles and practices
Ability to effectively and tactfully apply accepted health promotion methods, principles and practices with target populations, general public, and health professionals

General knowledge of local and State rules, regulations, procedures and policies

General knowledge of child health

General knowledge of the principles of public health services

General knowledge of the methods of organizing, coordinating and carrying out health and wellness programs

Skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment

Skill in excellent customer service; ability to exercise judgment in appraising situations and making decisions

Ability to accurately maintain patient medical records and prepare reports

Ability to use strong interpersonal and customer service skills using tact, patience and courtesy

Ability to pay close attention to detail and to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances

Ability to handle confidential information according to established procedures

Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form

Ability to diagnose and administer treatment of a variety of common illnesses and injuries

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports

Ability to repair and maintain assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, coworkers, youth, and the general public

Essential Education, Certification, and/or Licenses

Minimum Qualifications

High School education and minimum of two (2) years of experience in health education required

Bachelor’s degree in health education, health promotion, social work or other health related field preferred

Valid driver's license

Special Qualifications

Red Cross CPR certification, BLS and State of Iowa Department of Human Services Child and Adult Abuse certification upon hire

Obtain bloodborne pathogen training within 6 months of hire

Successful completion of Wise Guys Training of Facilitators and HHS SOAR Online training within 2 months of hire
