The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office is announcing the hiring process for the position of Entry Security Personnel. This is a part-time, hourly position with Monday – Friday work hours.  Scheduled work hours will be determined based upon the applicant's availability and the needs of the department.

Entry Security Personnel are responsible for screening all who enter at security check points throughout the Courthouse complex.  The primary responsibility of the Entry Security Personnel is to prevent, through thorough screening, unauthorized individuals, weapons, and contraband from entering the Courthouse.

Essential Functions

Become familiar with and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and those utilized by the Court Services Division.
Monitor entrance positions and conduct screening of incoming persons and packages using x-ray scanners, metal detectors, visual detection, and other accepted security practices.
Detect and confiscate all weapons and/or contraband.  If a weapon is detected, Entry Security Personnel will request assistance from a deputy sheriff or other law enforcement officer.
Possess the ability to use tact when dealing with an angry/combative person.
Assist all persons in locating areas (e.g. courtrooms, etc.) within the Courthouse, Services Building and Annex.
Provide information and respond to questions from the public and employees within their scope of expertise in a courteous and professional manner.
Establish a professional working relationship with other law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions.
Assist with any and all emergencies which may arise, including but not limited to fires or fire alarms, weather related emergencies and bomb threats.
Upon completion of proper training and orientation, be prepared to render immediate first aid and/or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation measures.  Summon medical personnel when appropriate.

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to complete standardized report forms and compose brief descriptive narratives.   Ability to use tact and verbal control when dealing with angry or combative persons.   Ability to understand and apply the basic principles and techniques of law enforcement.   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, the public, and Courthouse employees.   Ability to understand and operate, with proper training, the x-ray scanning devices and metal detection devices.   Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.   Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition;   Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.   Ability to utilize sound independent judgment in stressful and emergency situations.   Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all departmental communications, documents and correspondence.   Ability to efficiently and effectively use personal computer, including word processing and specialized software, phone, fax machine, copy machine, law enforcement radio, first aid equipment, x-ray and metal detection equipment and all other assigned equipment.

I was fortunate to become part of the Pottawattamie County family in 2014. I haven't wanted to work any other place since. The personnel I've come to know have truly become like family.
